When to Repair or Replace a Windshield

Your windshield has recently taken a hit — whether it’s from the impact of an accident or road debris rapping against the glass, you need to figure out if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced entirely. At Waxwerks & Audio+, our auto glass repair team is here to help you get your windshield like new again. Here are some ways we can gauge whether or not a windshield repair is feasible or if you need a windshield replacement.

Assessing the Size

If the size of the crack or chip is fairly small, then it’s a good candidate for an auto glass repair. In most cases, chips smaller than a quarter and cracks up to three inches in length can be repaired. However, it’s important to note that the original size of the damage can increase over time, so windshield repairs must be addressed as soon as possible.

Going Deep

Similar to the size of the damage, we’ll take a look at the depth of the damage. The windshield is comprised of the outer layer, plastic interlayer, and inside layer of glass. If the damage has penetrated through the outer and inner layer of glass, it’s too deep for a windshield repair.

Location, Location

Location of the damage is a crucial factor for our auto glass team to consider when analyzing your windshield. When the damage has extended to the outer edge of the glass, the structural integrity of the glass is no longer safe for the driver. Another area that should not be repaired is the glass in the driver’s line of sight. Repairs may distort the glass, which may later impair your sight of the road.
